Churros: a very Mexican universal dessert

If you haven’t had a churro, you have missed great part of history summarized in a snack.

The origin of churros is so universal that they can’t come to an agreement to which country is the source of the original recipe of the tasty fried dough.

Nevertheless, we can say it was born in China under the name Youtiao and it consisted exactly on dough, dipped in oil to be eaten as a salty snack.

Churros have several places of possible origins, since in the Arabic world they have similar food items, like the one called “Mushabbak”, a Lebanese snack, but still the closest birthplace to nowadays churros is Spain, where, during the hard work day of shepherds, who deserved a good snack and without bread ovens, they opted to make fried dough, sprinkled with sugar and they called it churro, due to the similarity with the horns of sheep called churras

Later on, conquerors took these recipes to America and when it became popular in Mexico it got different shapes to become what we know today.

Nowadays, you can find churros a mexican dessert with a variety of stuffing such as Dulce de leche, chocolate, marmalade or ice cream and can be sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. The width can vary and even can be eaten like sandwich. In every possible presentation, it is called a churro in Mexico but what is a constant is that you have to enjoy a delicious cup of hot cocoa with it.

No matter where they come from, our Mexican churros, reinvented are a part of the culture.
